Xeikon Cafe

Xeikon, an innovator in digital imaging technology, conceives, develops and delivers reel based, digital imaging presses for labelling and packaging applications, and for printing documents and for advertising applications.

Xeikon offers solutions which, are based on profitability, quality, flexibility and sustainability.

The latest Xeikon Café on packaging innovations was held on 28th- 31st March 2017, in Antwerp, and it presented innovative solutions demonstrating how digital production can be beneficial, especially in new emerging market segments.

MDV, an Aura partner, is an innovator in the field of digital imaging substrates. Xeikon has tested and approved several of MDV’s filmic substrates for labelling applications. It was therefore a pioneering opportunity for MDV to provide structured paper to be printed on the Xeikon 3500 press and then laminated and die-cut for use as luxury packaging boxes in the Gin and Wine packaging industries.

The beverage sector is a market with a big variety of labelling and packaging possibilities. Digital printing solutions are capable of offering diversity as well as flexibility. Also for small runs in corrugated carton, there are viable digital production solutions. The combination of MDV’s structured papers and anti-counterfeiting features give the brands, local vineyards and small breweries the opportunity to sell their product in an optimal way.

The production of the printed, laminated, die-cut and folded box as a ready packaging unit was demonstrated. Digital production of wine and gin packaging boxes, printed on the Xeikon 3500 press with authentication and tracking features and converted on a Zund digital cutting table were showcased. Xeikon Vectorizer created the digital file.

The general security printing software was provided by Agfa, and it encompasses a complete security ecosystem, and is known as Arziro Design 2.0. The complete system comprises of modules which include Arziro Anti-Copy, Arziro Authenticate, and Arziro Production.

Throughout the Conference, Ronald Dehn, and Jo Ferrante, the substrate experts from MDV provided support. Popular demand has initiated a search for a structured silver substrate, and MDV is already on its way to develop a matt silver paper for this exciting and growing packaging application.
